North East MP Welcomes Support Grant for Taxi Drivers

Published date : 18 January, 2021

SNP MP for Gordon, Richard Thomson, has welcomed funding from the Scottish Government to help support taxi and private hire drivers.

Scottish Government Finance Secretary Kate Forbes has announced the move, which triples the amount of support previously announced for eligible taxi drivers. A total fund of £57million has been made available, up from the £19million which was earmarked for supporting the sector in December.

Part of this is a one-off grant of £1,500, which will be paid directly to drivers through local councils in order to help cover drivers’ fixed costs.

Richard Thomson MP said: “I welcome the Scottish Government’s move to increase the funding allocated to the taxi and private hire drivers. Despite the downturn in custom, drivers will still have had to meet costs such as licencing, MOTs and maintenance, so this will go at least some way to helping to meet that outlay.

“I would like to extend my thanks to those who have transported key workers and members of the public on essential journeys through these times. Our taxi drivers play a hugely important role in helping people get about safely and securely. I am glad that drivers can now receive this support without the need to go through a complex application process.”
