Parliamentary Recognition for Mart's 150th Anniversary

Parliamentary Recognition for Mart's 150th Anniversary

Published date : 10 January, 2022

Thainstone-based farmers’ co-operative ANM Group has had the 150th anniversary of its founding recognised in a Motion tabled in the Westminster Parliament.

Gordon MP Richard Thomson tabled the Motion to mark the milestone anniversary of “the mart”.

Established in 1872, ANM Group is one of the largest and most progressive producer-owned farming, food and finance businesses in Scotland and ranked in the Top 25 of UK co-operatives.

Commenting, Richard Thomson MP said:

“The founding 150 years ago of what was Aberdeen and Northern Marts was a landmark occasion in the history of the North-east and it is fitting that it should receive Parliamentary recognition.

“The mart has evolved over those years into the ANM Group which we know today, but retains a vital role at the heart of the rural economy.

“ANM Group has been at the forefront of innovation throughout its existence with the development of modern auction centres, the pioneering of electronic and video auctions, and diversification into non-agricultural auctions and I wish the co-operative continued success in the future.”

The Motion states:

That this House notes that 2022 sees the 150th anniversary of the foundation of what is now the ANM Group Limited co-operative; recognises that North-east Scotland has been an area where, for centuries, livestock rearing and marketing has been a source of pride, prestige and considerable financial investment; acknowledges Aberdeen and Northern Marts generated a hive of activity where farmers, dealers, agricultural workers and families came together to do business and socialise; and congratulates ANM Group for the development of modern auction centres, the pioneering of electronic and video auctions, diversification into non-agricultural auctions and the move into the high-quality catering and hospitality market which are examples of the innovative approach which has made ANM Group a highly-successful farmer-owned business.
