Local MP Highlights Falkland Islands Government Competition for Schools
Gordon MP Richard Thomson has highlighted a competition which could see students from the North-east set off on a trip to the other side of the world.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands, the Falkland Islands Government is inviting students born between 10 Feb 2005 and 2007 to take part in a competition to win a visit to the remote islands.
This competition offers eight places to students in the UK aged between 16 and 18 (in February 2023) and from all backgrounds to win a trip to the Falkland Islands. They will be accompanied by academics and will have an amazing opportunity to explore the islands and meet islanders, and some of the resident 1,000,000 penguins.
Commenting, Richard Thomson MP said:
“This is a very interesting competition offering a trip to a location rich in biodiversity and wildlife, and is also a place which I suspect very few of us will ever ordinarily have the chance to visit during our lifetimes.
“I would encourage all students with an interest in seeing this amazing part of the world to take part in the competition and broaden their horizons.”

Eligible students are asked to answer the following question: What do the Falkland Islands mean to you? Their answer can be in the form of a film, podcast, essay or poster. The deadline for submissions from eligible students is 31 July 2022 and all eligible submissions will be judged by a panel, led by adventurer, author, and television personality Ben Fogle.
