Thomson Highlights National Voter Registration Day Ahead of Elections

Published date : 11 April, 2022

Gordon MP Richard Thomson has today encouraged local residents to register to vote ahead of National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) on 14 April 2022.

Monday 18 April is the last day that people can register to vote in the upcoming Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council elections, which are taking place on 5 May.

Organised by the charity My Life My Say, NVRD aims to encourage democratic participation in local and national elections.  While turnout in the last General Election for Gordon increased slightly, voter participation generally has been in decline over the last five years, and recent statistics show that less than half of young people in the UK are engaging in the voting process.

Commenting, Richard Thomson MP said:

“Irrespective of our political views, one thing most people can agree on is the importance of getting out there and voting.

“By voting, you ensure that your voice is heard and that your priorities are represented in political decision making.

“I’m proud to be backing National Voter Registration Day and would encourage everyone who hasn’t yet registered to vote, to do so before the deadline on 18 April. It takes five minutes and makes a real difference.”
