Richard Thomson Meets with North Aberdeenshire Foodbank

Published date : 31 August, 2022

Gordon MP Richard Thomson has visited North Aberdeenshire Foodbank in Inverurie and met with co-ordinator Shona Singer, Community Participation and Campaigns Lead, to discuss the current situation locally.

Foodbank stocks are dropping and there is a need for continued generous donations from the public and businesses while demand remains high throughout North Aberdeenshire since Covid, with the current Cost-of-Living crisis set to only increase community need.

Shona Singer commented:

“We welcomed the opportunity to show Richard around our Inverurie foodbank centre and warehouse, and talk to him about the challenges we are facing and continue to face as winter approaches.

“Please visit our website www.aberdeenshirenorth.foodbank.org.uk for a list of ways you can give help or get help.  We want to End Hunger in Aberdeenshire as we work towards a future where no one will need to use a food bank to put food on the table.”

Commenting after his visit, Richard Thomson MP said:

“The foodbank runs very effectively with a dedicated team of volunteers running the warehouse and making deliveries where required to those who need support.

“In the absence of UK Government support, many people are increasingly concerned and the Trussel Trust-aligned foodbank will do all they can to help people put food on the table when they need it.

“Poverty exists, even in relatively affluent areas like Gordon, and rural poverty too is real and often invisible.  Many of those who need help are working but low or static wages and increasing costs mean many find they need help.

“As more demand for foodbanks is expected, more volunteers are also needed to carry on the work of supporting our local communities across North Aberdeenshire, as well as a need for continued donations to support their work.”
