Local MP Backs Farm Safety Week

Published date : 19 July, 2023

Gordon MP Richard Thomson has given his support to Farm Safety Week and is highlighting the annual campaign aimed at promoting awareness of the impacts of farm accidents on the industry and community and promotes the importance of farming safely.

Figures from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Fatal Injuries in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing in Great Britain Report for 2022/23 show that 27 lives were lost on farms compared to 30 last year.

Commenting, Richard Thomson MP said:

“I commend the work done by the Farm Safety Foundation – the ‘Yellow Wellies’ – in promoting safety on the farm and safe working practices.

“It is a sobering statistic that while 18 per cent of all deaths in the workplace occur in agriculture, only one per cent of the working population are involved in agriculture.

“Events like Farm Safety Week are therefore a vitally important reminder to those working in the industry to help give rest of us food security that their personal security and safety is of the utmost importance.”
