Local MP Reminds Constituents of 3G Switch-Off Starts Next Week

Published date : 09 January, 2024

Gordon MP Richard Thomson is reminding constituents that the planned switch-off of 3G will take place across Scotland from next week.

Mobile operators are switching-off 3G as part of Ofcom’s plans to help bring faster and more reliable 4G and 5G to more people across Scotland.

Commenting, Richard Thomson MP said:

“The vast majority of mobile customers are already using a 4G or 5G device and won’t notice a change in their service, as they’re already benefiting from the speed and reliability of newer technology.   Customers who are still using 3G-only devices will move to the 2G network when 3G is switched-off. Customers will still be able to call and text from their phones as usual but will have limited access to data.

“Mobile operators have assured MPs that they have been in contact with customers since January 2022 to help them make the change to faster 4G and 5G.  Those who are still using 3G-only devices can still get support from customer care teams by calling 191 from their phone.  Vulnerable customers can speak to specialists by calling 191 and may benefit from a range of devices which can be offered free of charge for those in difficult financial circumstances.”
